Memorization I

We need God’s Word replace negative thoughts and memories. Scripture can replace negative thoughts with the truth of God’s word. We need truth to heal our hearts and minds.  We’ve spent too much time holding onto false beliefs.  The Author of all things inspired the Bible.  Let’s listen to Him through His word.

Reading the Bible brings truth to our minds.  Memorization takes truth deeper into our hearts.  While memorizing, we meditate on the word and give it a resting place inside of us.  We need to soak in the word so that it becomes a part of us.

“The Spirit gives life.  The flesh counts for nothing.  The words I have spoken to you are Spirit, and they are life.”  John 6:63

The Lord brings life through His words.  His life infuses us more and more as we learn, remember and apply His word.  Memorizing His word helps us to remember and follow it.

I’m often amazed at how my memory verse applies to the day.  For example, the day I memorized “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” (Ephesians 4:31), I noticed a lot of anger and nasty words inside of me.

I find peace and joy as I meditate on the word.  Memorizing enables me to focus on truth for extended periods of time.  While memorizing, I obey the command, “think about such things.”  Like Jeremiah wrote, “When I found your words, I devoured them; your words made me glad, they gave me joy” (Jeremiah 15:16, CJB).

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.  Philippians 4:8
