20 Redeemed

Redeem:  “To recover ownership by paying off a specified sum…To set free, rescue…To save from sinfulness.”  The American Heritage Dictionary, fourth edition.

After discussing shame and self-hatred, I want to encourage you.  From the last post, trusting safe people God sends us will help us let go of shame and self-hatred.  Talking about painful subjects can ease shame we feel about those subjects.

Shame says we are not good enough and don’t deserve love and acceptance.  Indeed, we are sinners and deserve God’s judgment.  The Bible also tells us that God redeemed us with the blood of Jesus.  Regardless of whatever bad things you have done or have been done against you, God still loves you.  He created you, and He paid the price for your sin.  You are twice His.  “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

Shame lies to us.  We need to believe God despite what we feel.  The Bible is more trustworthy than our feelings.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own under-standing.” (Proverbs 3:5)  We need to “set our hearts at rest in His presence whenever our hearts condemn us.  For God is greater than our hearts…” (1 John 3:19-20)  Our connection with God does not depend on feelings.  “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)  Focus on what God has done for you in Christ.  Receive God’s love in faith.  Even if you do not feel peace, your status with God is still peace if you believe in Jesus.

You need faith in Jesus, but faith is not the same as feeling.  Peace does not create our faith.  Rather, God’s word in the Bible and the Holy Spirit speak faith into us.  Peace follows faith.  We who have deep emotional wounds may believe a long time before experiencing peace.

The devil uses deception and doubt to elicit our confusion and shame.  The devil tries to destroy our faith in God.  Let go of lies, doubt and shame.  At times we need to exercise all our faith to change our focus to God.  Know God is holding onto us.  “I give them eternal life… no one can snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, Who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” (John 10:28-29)

The blood of Jesus is sufficient to pay for all of our sin.

Redeemed by the blood of Jesus,

Noah Woodrich
